Along the mountains and trails here there are various ways to mark the trail, from breaking or painting a branch(es) red, painting a tree with a red T mark, or the use of stone cairns. Stacks of stones, round or flat, to mark, for instance, a mountain summit, the way to follow the trail if it is not obvious, or to * mark a danger * on the path such as a sudden drop off.
Unless I have come that day expressly for wandering randomly, and especially if I do not know the area chosen for that day, I bring a compass and a map. If you can´t use a compass or can´t read a map, bring someone who can, or learn. Even on trails and mountains I/locals know, it can still be easy to get lost, if one is exhausted, the weather changes, or the weather has changed the path.
Some mountains have hytte (huts) of various size, selling various things such as hot cocoa, hotdogs, open most days. Some people use these as goals along the path also.
Fires are strictly limited to designated areas and expressly forbidden in dry season.
